Why Core PCE matters

Core PCE strips food and energy out of the PCE price index. It is the number most often referenced against the Federal Reserve's 2% inflation objective.

Because it is published after CPI and PPI, much of it is already estimated by the time it lands — surprises usually come from the services components.
