Why FOMC matters
The Federal Open Market Committee sets the target range for the federal funds rate. Its decisions anchor the entire U.S. interest-rate curve.
A meeting day has two distinct events: the statement and rate decision at 2:00 PM ET, then the Chair's press conference at 2:30 PM ET. Markets frequently move twice, and in opposite directions.
Four of the eight annual meetings also publish the Summary of Economic Projections, including the dot plot of individual rate expectations.

- The committee reviews economic conditions over two days, votes on the policy rate, publishes a statement at 2:00 PM ET and — at every meeting — holds a press conference at 2:30 PM ET.
- Why do traders watch the Fed?
- Policy rates set the discount rate applied to every future cash flow, so changes in expected policy reprice bonds, equities and the dollar.
- Is the decision the same as the press conference?
- No. The rate decision and statement come first at 2:00 PM ET; the Chair's press conference starts thirty minutes later and often carries the larger market reaction.
